The Big C (Cancer)

When you’re diagnosed, you’re handed two terrifying truths at the same time.

This could end you.

And the thing that might save you is going to cost you in more ways than one.

You agree to it all.

Not because you’re brave. Not because you’re strong.

But because you want to live.

And living comes at a cost.

There’s the physical cost. The way your body no longer feels like it belongs entirely to you.

The way it becomes a battlefield and a science experiment at the same time.

There’s the mental cost. The hypervigilance.

The scans. The waiting. The way every ache has a question mark attached to it. Missing the version of yourself who held a sense of safety in your body. The quiet trauma of it all.

The way your nervous system doesn’t always settle back down.

And for many, there’s the financial cost.

Deductibles. Co pays. Time off work. Careers paused. Savings drained. Bills that stack up while you’re just trying to stay alive. The quiet fear of wondering if you will be able to keep up with the cost of surviving.

People love the word survivor.

It sounds victorious. Triumphant.

But sometimes surviving looks like chronic side effects.

Sometimes it looks like anxiety that hums in the background and spikes without warning.

Sometimes it looks like medical bills that linger long after treatment ends.

Sometimes it looks like learning to function in a body that feels permanently altered.

You are grateful to be alive.

And you are allowed to grieve what it cost to stay that way.

Both can be true without canceling each other out.

Survival is not free.

It is earned with sacrifice.

And that sacrifice deserves to be acknowledged. Not minimized. Not

sugarcoated. Not wrapped in inspirational quotes.

Just honored.

Because surviving cancer isn’t just about not dying.

It’s about learning how to live again after everything it cost you.

Sometimes the future bothers me. Lord allow me to live without fear
